Garegin Nzhdeh Square Metro Station in Yerevan

Garegin Nzhdeh Square Metro Station is the southern terminal of Yerevan Metro’s main route, serving Shengavit district, Garegin Nzhdeh Square, Bagratunyats Avenue and nearby residential and transport areas.

Key Information

Garegin Nzhdeh Square Metro Station is one of the two main terminal points of Yerevan Metro and an important transport stop for the southern part of the city. Located in Shengavit district, it serves the area around Garegin Nzhdeh Square, Garegin Nzhdeh Street and Bagratunyats Avenue. For passengers travelling between the south of Yerevan and the city centre, this station is a practical starting or ending point on the main metro route. The station opened in 1987 and was previously known as Spandaryan Square. Its current name honours Garegin Nzhdeh, an Armenian political and military figure whose name is also attached to the nearby square and street. The station’s role is mostly urban and functional: it connects a busy residential and commercial district with central Yerevan, the railway station area, Republic Square and the north-western terminal at Barekamutyun. For many local passengers, it is a daily commuting station rather than a destination for leisure. For visitors, Garegin Nzhdeh Square can be useful when the destination is in southern Yerevan or when a route begins in Shengavit. It is not the best metro stop for the city’s main tourist sights, but it gives access to an important part of the capital that is often missed by travellers staying only around Kentron. From this station, passengers can continue north toward Shengavit, Gortsaranayin, Sasuntsi Davit, Zoravar Andranik and Republic Square. A ride to the central stations is straightforward and usually more predictable than surface travel during busier traffic periods. The nearby street network makes this station useful for onward movement by bus, taxi or walking. Bagratunyats Avenue and the streets around the square connect to local shops, residential blocks, services and transport points. Because the station is at the end of the main line, it can also be easier to understand for first-time riders: trains from here generally run toward the centre and onward to Barekamutyun. Still, passengers should pay attention if they are trying to reach Charbakh, because Charbakh is served by the separate branch through Shengavit, not by simply continuing past Garegin Nzhdeh Square. When using the station, allow time to identify the correct exit and keep the exact destination address ready. The surroundings are busy and practical rather than scenic, and the station is most valuable when used as a transport link. For people staying, working or visiting in Shengavit, Garegin Nzhdeh Square Metro Station is one of the most convenient ways to reach central Yerevan at a low cost while avoiding long surface routes through city traffic.
