Hovhannavank Monastery

Hovhannavank Monastery is one of the most dramatic monastery sites close to Yerevan. It stands in Ohanavan village, in Aragatsotn Province, directly on the edge of the deep Kasagh Gorge. The location is part of the experience: from the monastery courtyard and surrounding area, visitors see the canyon opening below, with cliffs, sky and the rugged landscape of central Armenia creating a powerful natural frame around the stone architecture. The complex includes the main church, a gavit, inscriptions, khachkars and carved stone details. The decoration is refined without being excessive: visitors can notice the portals, cross-stones, reliefs and the careful geometry that characterizes Armenian ecclesiastical architecture.

The edge of the gorge can be windy, and in winter or rainy weather the ground may be slippery, so comfortable shoes and suitable clothing are important. Visitor facilities are limited compared with central Yerevan, but the cultural value and views make the trip highly worthwhile.
