Iranian passports to become valid for 10 years

Iranian passports are set to become valid for 10 years, a change that matters for Iranian travelers, Iranians living abroad and people who frequently travel for tourism, work, study or residence.

According to the published report on the review of the bill to amend Article 25 of Iran’s Passport Law, passport validity for people aged 15 and above has been set at 10 years. Under the current legal framework, Iranian passports have generally been issued with a 5-year validity period.

The change is important for people aged 15 and above. For people under 15, separate rules may continue to apply, mainly because facial appearance changes faster at younger ages. Travelers should therefore check the exact rule for children and minors before applying.

For Iranian travelers planning to visit Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, the UAE, Europe or other destinations, a 10-year passport can make travel planning easier. Longer passport validity means fewer renewals and more stability when applying for visas, booking flights, reserving hotels, registering for university, handling residence paperwork or planning work-related travel.

However, an important rule remains: many countries and airlines require a passport to have at least 6 months of remaining validity at the time of travel. A 10-year passport does not remove the need to check the remaining validity before buying tickets or crossing borders.

For travel to Armenia, a valid passport is essential. Whether traveling by land from Iran to Armenia or flying to Yerevan, travelers should check the passport expiry date before departure. Low remaining validity may cause problems with tickets, border crossing, hotel check-in, banking, residence extensions or onward travel.

The change is also important for Iranians living abroad. Many Iranians in Armenia, Europe, Turkey, the UAE and other countries renew passports through Iranian embassies, consulates or consular systems. A 10-year validity period could reduce repeated consular visits and renewal-related costs.

Still, this report concerns the legislative review of the amendment to Article 25 of the Passport Law. Practical implementation depends on the completion of the legal process, final approval, official notification and administrative rollout. Anyone applying now should verify the current operational status with passport police, official service offices or Iranian consular missions.

For people who already hold a passport, the change does not automatically mean that the expiry date printed on the current passport changes. Usually, new validity rules apply to newly issued or renewed passports unless an official authority announces otherwise. Current holders should follow the date printed in their passport.

People subject to military-service rules, exit-permit rules, student status, residence procedures or other legal restrictions should check those requirements separately. A longer passport validity period does not automatically remove all exit restrictions.
